Developing the practice nursing workforce locally through the

Foundations of General Practice Nursing programme 2012

We are aware that some practices are experiencing difficulty recruiting experienced practice nurses to general practice.  Currently there is an absence of an established training pathway in the area, through which registered nurses wanting to move into a general practice nurse role receiving support to deliver safe, evidence based care; has been a real barrier to registered nurses accessing a general practice nursing career.

NHS ONEL have commissioned a Foundation of General Practice Nursing which is delivered through Plymouth university. The programme is accredited at level 6 (60 points) and will run between 2 March and 20 July 2012 delivered at local venues. The theoretical component and where appropriate, clinical lab skills, will be delivered in the following clinical areas:-

  • Legal, ethical and professional issues
  • Health and Safety
  • Infection Control
  • Quality Standards and Clinical Governance
  • Self Care
  • The Expert Patient
  • Team work and Leadership
  • Organisational issues including change management and culture
  • Reflective Practice

  • Communication and Consultation skills, including the use of video analysis
  • Health Promotion and Obesity Management including facilitating Behaviour Change
  • Immunisation of children and adults
  • Travel Health
  • Ear Care
  • Introduction to Contraception
  • Mental Health,
  • Tissue Viability and Wound Management

The programme has been commissioned at a cost to NHS ONEL of £4,400 per nurse. A small contribution of £300 per nurse is requested to access the programme.  If you are currently or considering recruiting a practice nurse and are interested in participating in this programme, we would like to hear from you.
